5.1 Ritcher Scale – Earthquake in Gujarat – (20 June 2012 at 1:44 am)

Ahmedabad: An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Ritcher Scale rattled most parts of Gujarat in the wee hours of Wednesday. No reports of loss of life or damage to property have been reported.

As per the Indian Metrological Department’s Seismology Centre, the moderate earthquake struck at 01.44.02 am with its epicenter at 26 km South-East of Dholavira in Kutch district.

The tremors were felt across various parts of Gujarat including Bhuj, Rapar, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar and Ahmedabad other cities too.

"Earlier a mild quake came. Then occurred the bigger jolt measuring 5 on Richter scale and it had the depth of 80 kms," Institute of Seismological Research Director General B K Rastogi said.

"There were 27 aftershocks registered, in the magnitude of 1 to 3 on the Richter scale, and majority of them were in Kutch and Saurashtra region. But there are no reports of damage to property or the life," he said.

"In Ahmedabad also some people felt minor tremors but we have not received any panic calls," said Chief Fire Officer M F Dastur.

25K doctors from Gujarat to join India bandh

AHMEDABAD: On June 25, 25,000-odd doctors from the state will join their peers across India to protest against the National Commission for Human Resources for Health (NCHRH) Bill, 2011. Indian Medical Association (IMA) officials, however, said that essential services will not be disrupted, and in government hospitals doctors will work with a black ribbon on their arms.
According to IMA's Gujarat chapter, more than 5,000 private hospitals, nursing homes and clinics will remain closed on Monday. Dr Bipin Patel, secretary of the Gujarat chapter, told TOI that doctors will stage a protest to put forth their demands at district levels.
"We do not want to make patients in dire need suffer and have asked doctors with government hospitals to continue with their duties with a black ribbon on their arms as mark of protest," he said.
Mehul Shah, president of Ahmedabad Medical Association (AMA), said that indoor patients who are already in hospitals will get monitoring and emergency care, but OPDs will not run and planned surgeries will not be conducted. "We are providing helpline numbers for patients who can contact our doctors for guidance," he said.
Striking doctors will hold a dharna from 10 am to 2 pm at Natraj Cinema. A candlelight march is planned at 7 pm at Pushpkunj in Kankaria, Vastrapur Lake, and Rambaug.

Flying fox to add to fun at Sabarmati

AHMEDABAD: After the amphibus, it's now the 'flying fox' that the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation (SRFDCL) plans to introduce at the riverfront. On Wednesday, the corporation floated bids asking outdoor adventure groups to install and operate the zip-line across the river.
The zip-line or the 'flying fox', as it is popularly called, consists of a pulley suspended on a cable, and mounted on an incline. It is designed to enable a user to travel from one end to the other - in this case, between the east and west banks of the river. Zip-line tours are quite popular in the west vacation circuits and outdoor adventure camps.
Besides this, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation ( AMC) plans boat rides in Vastrapur lake. The proposal for the rides - speed boats, water scooters and paddle boats - has been forwarded to the standing committee by the recreation and culture committee of the civic body.
"There was a proposal for the water rides in the lake and it was pending since long," said a senior member of the recreation committee.

AMC to add more fun at Kankaria, eyes higher revenue

Adding more adventure and fun at Kankaria lake, the residents will soon get to experience some unique recreational activities including a roller coaster ride, segway or self-balancing vehicle, aquacart, mystique world, tower ride and trackless train. The proposals that have already been received by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) through Expression of Interest (EoI) are being finalised which are expected to take off within a month.
“The prerequisite condition for the proposals was that it should be the first in the country. No such activity should be there by any other or the same company sending its proposal for the EoI. Thus, all these adventure activities will not only be the first of its kind in the state but in the country. Like existing activities, these will also be on a revenue sharing model,” said Deputy Municipal Commissioner M S Patel.
All these adventure will be finalised keeping a mix of water, land and air and catering to different age groups. For instance, the “mystique world” will be a fun place for children that will include plants and animals in a magnified version. Similarly, the trackless train will take the passengers on the roads. Self-balancing two and four wheeler vehicles will be both for children as well as adults. Another surprise to be added will be roller coaster and tower ride.
The lake that has already generated Rs 15 crore till date from 1.65 visitors since it was renovated and opened for public on December 25, 2008, is expected to add more revenues with these recreational activities. According to the lake authority officials, as compared to 6.9 lakh visitors last year, the number has touched 7.35 lakh this year in May.
“Out of the total revenue generation on a day of around Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.50 lakh, the maximum is contributed by entry tickets that comes out to be around Rs 1.25 lakh to Rs 1.50 lakh.
This is followed by the train ride which is one of the most popular rides among children as well as adults. The trains generates around Rs 50,000-60,000 on daily basis. Another popular activity is “Kids city” that brings up a revenue of around Rs 20,000-30,000,” Patel said.
Thus, the authorities are expecting that once these activities are added for the visitors, it will not only result in an increase in the footfall but also revenue generation for the corporation.

800 from Ashima join stir of Arvind Mill workers

AHMEDABAD: The erstwhile Manchester of the East is grappling with labours' issues. On Thursday, workers from yet another textile mill went on a strike.

Demanding 40 per cent wage hike, around 800 workers from Ashima Textiles' denim and yarn dyeing division at Khokhra did not join the work. Even as the deadlock between the striking labourers at Arvind's Naroda plant and its voiles division Ankur Textiles continues, workers from another mill going on strike has cast a shadow over other mills. Like Arvind, Ashima too termed the strike illegal.

In fact, sensing trouble following the Arvind strike, Ashima, Soma and Asarwa textiles mills had on Wednesday hiked wages of their workers and signed an agreement with labourers' representatives to maintain industrial peace.

"The wage hike issue has been pending with the competent authority. However, to give an interim relief, we hike wages by Rs 25 per day for our workers. But just a day after the hike a few workers have gone on strike," said Chintan Parikh, chairman and managing director, Group Ashima.

Terming the strike illegal, Parikh added that the company management will not bow down to the pressure. The company currently manufacturers around 17 lakh meters of denim per month. The workers at Ashima are demanding a 40% wage hike. "On day one around 1,000 workers joined the strike and another 1,500 will be upping the ante against management on Friday. Our salaries haven't been revised in the last two decades. We have been talking to workers from other textile mills and won't give up until our demands are met," said Ashok Sisodiya, a worker and representative of Ashima mill labourers.

Workers from Arvind's Naroda plant who have been on a strike for more than 15 days said that they are too talking to workers from others mills to join the strike to build pressure on mill owners. "This might be the first time after independence that textile workers strike has blown out to this proportion. In 1974, workers went on strike as part of their support for the massive reservation movement, but since then the city has never witnessed such a big strike," said Ahmedabad Textile Mills' Association secretary general Abhinav Shukla.

Runway repair at Ahmedabad airport to hit summer travel

AHMEDABAD: When air traffic peaks in summer due to holiday rush, maintenance work at the SVP international airport may disrupt the travel plans of Amdavadis from April to June.

Business travel will be hit the most because airport authorities plan to partially close the runway for carpeting between 10.30am and 5pm everyday from April 1. Airport authorities say schedules of many Mumbai- and Delhi-bound flights will be changed. Flight operations will be fully suspended at Ahmedabad airport between May 15 and June 15 from 10.30 am to 5pm. Last year, the airport witnessed an average of 106 flights daily from April to December.

Authorities told TOI that during this period a major part of the 3,599-metre runway will be carpeted. "The runway will be shut down for six hours daily. Initially, around 10 flights will be rescheduled. We have held meetings with airline operators and have asked them to announce the details of rescheduled flights so that those getting affected can plan accordingly," said Ahmedabad airport director Anuj Aggarwal. But the bigger jolt to the travellers is that many airlines have not yet declared new flight schedules during the period and are still taking bookings.

"Airlines are making no effort to help fliers. Ahmedabad airport gets a stepmotherly treatment from airline operators who pull out flights from here to adjust traffic at bigger hubs like Delhi and Mumbai during summer. So the next three months will see chaos at the airport and travellers will have to bear the brunt," said an airline official. "I fly to Mumbai and Delhi in the morning almost four times a month and return the same afternoon. But the Air India flight from Delhi, which lands at Ahmedabad in the afternoon, is now suspended. So I was relying on other operators, but if other flights are also to be rescheduled, my work will suffer," said a senior telecom official.

20,000 policemen to guard Lord Jagannath’s yatra

Four bomb disposal squads, quick response teams, 23 CCTV cameras, 29 PCR vans, 108 emergency ambulances and fire engines will be kept in alert mode to thwart any untoward incident during the procession.

Security personnel carrying out search to detect explosives in the areas near the temple
As many as 38 spots have been identified on the procession route which share a tainted past. “We have marked 38 locations where security will be stiff. While 23 CCTV cameras have been installed on the entire procession stretch, sensitive areas will be laced with PTZ cameras. Four bomb disposal squads, 29 PCR vans and four quick response teams will also be kept in the alert mode,” said the JCP. Each bomb disposal squad will have 50 members.

“A real time update on the location of the Lord’s chariot will be sent to senior top cops through automated SMSes. 108 ambulances and fire brigade vehicles will be deployed at 13 locations on the 18-km yatra route. About 55 videographers will capture the entire event,” said Sharma.

In case of emergency, mobile phone service providers will be asked to stop their services temporarily, he added.

The department has also decided to honour its best performing constables. “Those cops who will be found violating the orders or discipline will face action,” said a source in the department.

Last year, a batch of IPS officers from Hyderbabad had come to the city to see how city police ensured safety during the mammoth procession. Traffic top cops S M Katara and Siddharth Khatri briefed media personnel about the traffic route on the Rathyatra day. Areas falling under Shahpur police jurisdiction will be equipped with PTZ cameras permanently, said Sharma. CP Notification

Ahmedabad police ready with Jagannath Rath Yatra plan

AHMEDABAD: When the 135th Jagannath Rath Yatra will start on Thursday morning, more than 20,000 personnel from police and paramilitary forces will be on their toes to make sure that the chariots get a safe passage. The senior police officials in the city will conduct a dress rehearsal on Tuesday morning to inspect the arrangements and meet the local leaders.

Joint commissioner of police (special) A K Sharma addressed the media on Monday about the security arrangements made by the force for the procession. "This year, there will be over 20,000 personnel and officers of the city and state police, along with paramilitary forces, on duty on the 22-kilometer-long route. The cavalcade of chariots, trucks and tableaux, will be nearly 1.5 km long. We have conducted separate briefings of various teams over the past 10 days to ensure everybody knows their role," he said.

Sharma said that they have made some new arrangements for the yatra. "First of all, we will have live SMS updates for the police officers above the rank of sub-inspectors. They will get SMSs as soon as the chariot has passed from a particular spot. We have collaborated with a private firm to disseminate the information so that the team posted next on route is alerted. Second, we have covered sensitive parts of the route with CCTV cameras. Shahpur, Dariapur and Jamalpur will have 23 CCTV cameras to monitor the situation constantly from the city police control room," said Sharma.

Every year, the chariots were embedded with GPS system so that it can be monitored by the police officials. This year, 14 police vehicles will also be equipped with the transmitters. The police said that these vehicles will be placed in the caravan after a gap of every 15 vehicles so that at the time of emergency, the nearest team can be intimated and deployed immediately.

Before the chariots pass, four teams of the bomb detection and disposal squad (BDDS) of 50 personnel each will comb the nearby areas and give a go ahead. The houses which have become dangerous due to their dilapidated condition have been served notices by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). "At every such building, a policeman will be deployed to prevent people from climbing up the building to ensure it doesn't crumble under their weight," said an official.

Ahmedabad slum children to spread Gandhi’s message in US

Washington :  Sixteen children from the slums of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, will tour the United States from May 6 to June 16 to spread Mahatma Gandhi’s message of “Oneness” through a 90 minute dance-drama.
Called “Ekatva” (Oneness), the show sharing a “message of love, inspiration, and a call to action: to push the world closer to oneness and peace” will be staged in Chicago, Washington DC, San Francisco, Los Angele's, Houston, Austin, Atlanta and Montclair and New Jersey.
“Ekatva” was inspired by a similar project called “Ekta” (Unity), which was created in 2000 by Manav Sadhna, a nonprofit based at the Mahatma Gandhi Ashram, and teachers from the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, the organisers said.
In keeping with the mission of Manav Sadhna, the children “will not only perform in the US, but also work with other nonprofits, serve the underprivileged in the area, help clean parts of the city, work to connect different religions, and uplift the spirit of humanity.”
“It sounds like a large task for small people – but I have learned every day in working with these children, that they are not ‘small’ in any way -they are capable of so much,” said “Ekatva” director Nimesh Patel, a Wharton Business School graduate and former hip-hop artist.
Patel has become a full-time volunteer for the past two and half years to lead these children and the vision of the “Ekatva” experiment.
The performance is directed and choreographed by Mallika Sarabhai and the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts.
A wide range of international organizations including Project Ahimsa have contributed to supporting the “Ekatva” tour and performance.

Guj: Strict vigil on the occasion of 'rath yatra'

Ahmedabad, July 19: Special precaution has been taken by the Gujarat government on the eve of the annual 'Rath Yatra' of Lord Jagannath, which will be taken out from the century-old historical Jagannath Temple in the minority dominated Jamalpur area tomorrow on the auspicious occasion of 'Ashadi Bij.'

The old city area has already turned into a ''police line'' with about 8,000 armed policemen, including BSF and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel, deployed on the 25-km route.

Security agencies plan to deploy about 20,000 armed policemen and maintain strict vigil from 30 watch towers and 300 rooftop points at various places in the city.

Meanwhile, the police has detained an unspecified number of anti-social elements as a precautionary measure.

Intelligence agencies have informed the Gujarat police that this being the election year, miscreants could spark off trouble during the procession.

The traditional ''Rath Yatra'' with three chariots of Lord Jagannath (Krishna), Lord Balram and Shubhadra will be taken out tomorrow with religious fervour.

The three chariots will be pulled by 1,200 burly men, and followed by 100 trucks with floats showcasing Indian culture, 16 elephants, 30 gymnastic groups, 20 musical bands and about 2,000 ''sadhus''.

The ''Rath Yatra'' will be flagged off by Chief Minister Narendra Modi after performing ''pooja'' at the temple at 0700 hours tomorrow. Temple authorities said the city police have given permission to take out the procession on the traditional route and have assured of adequate security blanket. As per tradition the three main chariots will be pulled by members of the Khalashi community. After passing through various parts of the city, it will return back to the Temple late in the evening.

The entire ''rath yatra'' will be video-filmed and will be closely monitored by senior officers from a special control room set up at the police headquarters here.

A total of 55 companies of para-military forces, including BSF, will be pressed into service. The police personnel will be equipped with bullet-proof jackets and night-vision equipment.

6,500 vehicles to be sold in city this Ashadhi Bij

Automobile and two-wheeler dealers in the city are gearing up to deliver around 6,500 vehicles on Ashadhi Bij (Rath Yatra day) on Tuesday.
This is almost 20% more than the number of vehicles — both two-wheelers and four-wheelers — delivered on the auspicious day last year.

Vehicle dealers in the city said there is nothing surprising in this as, traditionally, customers have preferred to take delivery on Ashadhi Bij as it is considered auspicious for this purpose.
President of Ahmedabad Automobile Dealers Association, Anil Sanghvi, said that, last year, around 4,250 two-wheelers and 1,250 four-wheelers were handed over to customers on Rath Yatra day in the city.

“This year, we expect to deliver more than 5,000 two-wheelers and around 1,500 four-wheelers,” he said. “Compared to last year, sales and delivery on Ashadhi Bij have gone up this year.”
Two-wheeler dealers expect deliveries to double on Rath Yatra day. Jayesh Pandit, CEO of the two-wheeler division at Manan Autolink, said, “We are expecting an almost 100% rise in demand for two-wheelers on Ashadhi Bij. Our target this year is to deliver 600 bikes on that single day.”
The Petal Group says it expects sales to increase by 15% on Tuesday. “As compared to last year, we are expecting a rise of almost 15% in sales and delivery on Rath Yatra day,” said Sukhbir Bagga, CEO at Petal Group.
“We would be delivering around 90 Hyundai cars, 200 Suzuki motorbikes and 70 Yamaha bikes onTuesday.”
Manish Khatav, regional manager, Bajaj Auto Ltd, said, “The festive season and changing customer tastes are the reasons for the rise in sales. On Rath Yatra eve, we would be delivering around 500 bikes in Ahmedabad alone.”
The used-car sector in Ahmedabad is equally upbeat about sales on auspicious Ashadhi Bij. Dealers expect to sell more than 200 used cars on Tuesday.
“On Rath Yatra day, we are expecting a rise in business of almost 25% over last year,” said a used-car broker, Tejas Shah of Krishna Motors.
